An R-HGN design is primarily clear, timeless, durable, and proportionally exciting. When designing an interior, I consistently seek tension and contrast—contrasts in height and width, dark and light, but also in the use of materials and color. I always strive for a strong and timeless whole—pure use of materials is essential—and I enjoy pushing the boundaries of what is technically feasible. I prefer to develop a design in detail and set the bar high for myself and for the contractors... the famous saying "not possible is impossible" is ingrained in my work. My years of experience in furniture production and knowledge of materials certainly contribute. I strive for a design with a mature, timeless, and unique look, but I certainly don't shy away from using color or even graphic elements. An HGN design is durable, personal, modern, and one that reflects the client's wishes. A truly good design is created through a clear and personal dialogue with the client.

HOUSE RENOVATION

RENOVATING AN EXISTING HOME AND GARAGE IN GELEEN 2025-2026 The assignment: renovate the house, extension, and existing garage, primarily to enhance the exterior's visual appeal and provide additional insulation. The facade is clad in green and gray zinc, featuring staggered standing seams and exterior insulation between the existing facade and the zinc. By visually integrating the detached garage into the house, a cohesive whole is created. The very slim window frames, colored to match the zinc, complete the overall effect down to the smallest detail. This resulted in a design solution that visually elevates the house while also adding comfort and sustainability.

GARAGE - OFFICE RENOVATION

REDEVELOPMENT OF AN EXISTING GARAGE, GRONSVELD, 2025. Status: Draft permit - positive recommendation. In this design, an existing garage is given an additional floor, clearly linked to the main building. Modern yet refined, with an eye for detail and respect for the listed building walls. The overhanging facade and the rust-colored natural slates, in particular, give the entire building a robust appearance. Offices are located on the ground floor and a luxury B&B is located on the upper floor.

LUNCHROOM

Maastricht 2015 Lunchroom 't Piepenhoes This lunchroom has a long history – a long-standing and solid reputation ensures that this establishment is "full" daily. Our task was not to drive away the established customer base with a renovated and perhaps overly modern interior. Thus, we managed to translate the atmosphere of the existing lunchroom into a contemporary interior while preserving the ambiance of "the old days."

HOTEL

A hotel with "sustainable chocolate" as its main theme. Both the graphic design and the choice of materials have given the rooms a unique style, each with its own theme. Subtle, but with plenty of references to "sustainable chocolate."

MUSEUM

Helpoort Museum Maastricht 2021 Completed The assignment: Design a museum in the oldest surviving gatehouse in the Netherlands, presenting all relevant artifacts in an innovative way. The museum has a contemporary feel, despite the fact that this small and unique structure was built in 1229. By using wall-sized illustrations of old pen and ink drawings, there is also plenty to see for young visitors.

BATHROOM

Maastricht 2012 This bathroom is made of chiseled Belgian bluestone and solid Wenge wood. The result is a timeless and powerful design. The small bathroom has an open connection to the bedroom. The use of solid wood on the floor and the connection to the natural stone create a robust and warm atmosphere. Even now, this bathroom looks brand new and ... "current."

BATHROOM

Amsterdam 2014: This bathroom features Norwegian slate natural stone and Santos rosewood. The result is a timeless and powerful design. The perfect lighting and the balance between white plaster and natural stone make this small bathroom feel spacious.

KITCHEN

Maastricht 2012 This kitchen has a light, airy feel thanks to the suspended unit. The 4800 mm composite countertop is clearly laid out with a relatively large amount of workspace. The cabinets opposite provide the desired storage space, a refrigerator, and a freezer.

EXTENSION

Maastricht 2009 Extension of a house. This house is beautifully situated with unobstructed views of the "high fronts." A beautiful, characteristic semi-detached building needed renovation on challenging terrain. The corridors for the construction work ran directly underneath the planned extension. By placing ample glass across the entire width of the house, a relatively dark house has been transformed into a fresh and modern living space. Modernity is clearly visible yet seamlessly blends in with the style of the original house.

FURNITURE

2001 - NOW In this overview, you'll find several designs that are mostly handcrafted by us. This also applies to many bathroom and kitchen components. Many "products" are manufactured in our own workshop and always have a sustainable and—especially through the use of natural materials—timeless appearance. In other words, I've often had the opportunity to provide a client with a design that was custom-made. Collaborations with both large and small companies have always yielded successful results.

Maastricht hotel

Hotel in Maastricht city center Maastricht 2023 The assignment: Design several hotel rooms in this existing, distinctive building, with a "chocolate" theme. Combining a shop and hotel will make a powerful statement. The existing shop is already a well-known name in this city. Ongoing project.

Ralph Hagen

Product design | interior architecture | Concepts

I've been working in design since 2001. After starting at an architectural firm in London, I launched an interior design firm with a colleague in 2003. Small commissions, in-house production of kitchens and furniture... a wonderful time. Six years later, I was inspired to start a company specializing in the most exclusive and sustainable chocolate varieties. This led to several busy years with clients such as De Bijenkorf, Michelin-starred restaurants, and even projects in Dubai. Ralph Hagen Chocolatier BV and the resulting retail concept, DarQ, had my full attention for six years. Design was on hold until... In 2016, our family bought our dream home—a former coach house—and I started designing again. The result: a house where we, with three children and a dog, feel completely at home, a house where we've done what others might find a bit too daunting. Anyway... "Old loves never die," so in 2017, I largely transferred my chocolatier business to my brother-in-law, who had been involved from the beginning, and I rekindled my old passion. Darq has since become a household name in Maastricht with a wonderful chocolate hotel concept. R-HGN was born. From that moment on, assignments of all kinds came my way: private residences, hotel interiors, furniture design, and even the refurbishment of a doctor's office. Each assignment has a specific design challenge, budget, and spatial framework... I think in solutions—one of the main reasons I love this profession so much; because solutions are always available.
